Chuck

September 28th, 2008 · No Comments

I am going to recommend a TV show, because I have found it to be one of the most entertaining on television today.  The show is “Chuck” on NBC.  The season two premier is Monday night.  If you didn’t see season one, that’s fine, because season one didn’t end with a cliffhanger (probably because of the writers’ strike) and I’ve read that they’re going to make it really easy for new viewers to be able to catch up with the premise of the story.

I had heard about the show and season one just came out on DVD a couple of weeks ago, so we got them through Netflix and we’ve watched all 13 episodes of the first season.  I was hooked within the first ten minutes or so of the show when I saw that Chuck has a “Tron” poster hanging in his bedroom and the “Intersect” CIA computer uses an original Macintosh as a terminal.  There are many refrences to geek culture and 80s movies and pop culture.  It’s a comedy/action show that doesn’t take itself too seriously.  It’s just a fun show, and this is the reason I’m recommending it..

Eric’s Bad Movies: Grease 2 1982 – Film.com

My sister and I loved “Grease” and when “Grease 2” came out, my Grandmother took us to see it.  We thought it was the greatest at the time, but boy, when I watch it now, I cringe.

This guy is a funny writer, and hits the nail on the head in this writeup.  If you have some time, look at some of his other posts.  Who even knew there was a “Mac and Me” movie?.

Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom

September 21st, 2008 · No Comments

I finished reading “Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom” by Cory Doctrow.  If you are a Sci Fi and/or Disney fan, then I think you’ll like this book.  As a lifelong fan of Disney World, who dreamed that one day he would be rich enough to actually live in WDW (The Living Seas was going to be my home–don’t ask), I really enjoyed this book and relating to the characters who did get to live and work there and the passion that Julius has for the Haunted Mansion and WDW.  Granted, the book is about much, much more than Disney–it’s about life and relationships–but the setting of the book was great for a Disney geek like myself.

One of the neatest things about the book is that Cory Doctrow released it under the Creative Commons license, so you if you don’t want to buy the book, you don’t have to.  Just go to Cory Doctrow’s site to download it for free.  I ended up buying it because I don’t have a fancy eBook reader, and I didn’t feel like sitting at my computer to read it.

Thanks to those of you that recommended it to me!.

Plan for Change

September 17th, 2008 · No Comments

The Change We Need

I find it tough to argue with this:

In the past few weeks, Wall Street’s been rocked as banks closed and markets tumbled. But for many of you – the people I’ve met in town halls, backyards and diners across America – our troubled economy isn’t news. 600,000 Americans have lost their jobs since January. Paychecks are flat and home values are falling. It’s hard to pay for gas and groceries and if you put it on a credit card they’ve probably raised your rates. You’re paying more than ever for health insurance that covers less and less.

This isn’t just a string of bad luck. The truth is that while you’ve been living up to your responsibilities Washington has not. That’s why we need change. Real change. This is no ordinary time and it shouldn’t be an ordinary election. But much of this campaign has been consumed by petty attacks and distractions that have nothing to do with you or how we get America back on track.

Here’s what I believe we need to do. Reform our tax system to give a $1,000 tax break to the middle class instead of showering more on oil companies and corporations that outsource our jobs. End the ‘anything goes’ culture on Wall Street with real regulation that protects your investments and pensions. Fast track a plan for energy ‘made-in-America’ that will free us from our dependence on mid-east oil in 10 years and put millions of Americans to work. Crack down on lobbyists – once and for all – so their back-room deal-making no longer drowns out the voices of the middle class and undermines our common interests as Americans.

And yes, bring a responsible end to this war in Iraq so we stop spending billions each month rebuilding their country when we should be rebuilding ours. Doing these things won’t be easy. But we’re Americans. We’ve met tough challenges before. And we can again. I’m Barack Obama. I hope you’ll read my economic plan. I approved this message because bitter, partisan fights and outworn ideas of the left and the right won’t solve the problems we face today. But a new spirit of unity and shared responsibility will.

I pray that people start listening to the messages from both candidates and realize which side actually has a plan and is prepared to take over the White House..

Voldemort Hath No Fury Like Angry Harry Potter Fans

September 8th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Voldemort Hath No Fury Like Angry Harry Potter Fans

“Many fans felt Warner Bros.’s stated reason for the delay — that the film would make a bigger splash in the middle of summer — was a crass admission that the studio cares only about bigger box-office returns. “YOU just slapped the face of EVERY Harry Potter Fan and told us you don’t care what we want — you only want our money!” stormed Natalie DeGennaro, a 50-year-old electronic-design engineer who lives in Hillsborough, N.C…”

Ummm…yeah.  Warner Bros. isn’t making these movies out of the goodness of their heart.  Of course all they want from the fans is their money.  They are a BUSINESS.  Jeez.  These people are nuts.  Not calm and subdued like Star Wars fans.

Oh, yeah–one more thing…if you’re a 50-year old and you’re writing letters to WB about a delay in the release of the Harry Potter movies, then you really should rethink your life.  Or just re-read the f-ing childrens’ books one more time and calm down.  It’s only 8 months; not 8 years.  We have bigger problems in the world.  Like making sure Palpatine…I mean Voldemort…I mean McCain and Miss Alaska don’t get into the White House..

An Alaskan’s Opinion

September 5th, 2008 · No Comments

snopes.com: A Note to All by Anne Kilkenny

Very interesting reading.  Why do all “fiscal conservitives” increase spending so much and put government in debt?  Reagan had over a $200 billion budget deficit, G.H.W. Bush had over a $300 billion budget deficit (in only 4 years), and G.W. Bush is projected to have a $482 billion deficit.  The only president in the last 25 years to have a budget surplus was Clinton, with over a $200 billion surplus.

But one thing that really scares me (if the events in the letter are true) is Palin’s desire to have certain books removed from the public library.  WTF?  Seriously?  She’s for censorship?  What a horrible, horrible action..
