I, Cringely . The Pulpit . War of the Worlds | PBS
I think he’s right that we need to think differently about technology in schools, and to embrace it as a tool, rather than something to keep out of school. However, I think he’s completely wrong that in the future we won’t have schools as we know them today. I personally think that there needs to be a physical place that children and teens go to learn and be with other people their own age, mainly for the social interaction (this is the issue I have with home schooling).
I think Cringely makes a huge leap by assuming that all kids are equally motivated to learn at a certain pace and can (and will) do so on their own. I’m pretty sure that they aren’t, and teachers are necessary to guide the children down the path to knowledge. Teachers are probably our most valuable resource and the attention and knowledge transfer that they provide is necessary in the lives of everyone.
Embrace technology: yes. But let’s do it wisely..
