Disney to Acquire Marvel Entertainment – MarketWatch
UNREAL!!! I am completely floored by this, but I think it’s a great acquisition. The biggest question that comes to my mind is what happens to Islands of Adventure’s Marvel section and their Spiderman ride? The Hulk coaster and Dr. Doom’s Fall and everything else in the land can be rethemed, but Spiderman will be tough. Maybe Disney will have to let the Marvel land stay at IOA as part of the merger in order to pass regulatory requirements and just collect license fees from Universal. I tend to think that’s unlikely, since Disney is the leader in synergy and they’ll want Marvel to be at the Disney parks–or at least NOT at Universal’s parks.
I’m still in shock..

Too bad. DC > Marvel. That is a strange acquisition.

True. But Marvel > no superheros, especially when you have the preschool and tween girl market locked up and have nothing for the boys.
The strangest thing is that the deal between Marvel/Universal Orlando seems to be locked up forever, so I don’t know how that’s going to play out. I can’t see Disney spending $4 billion and not being able to use the characters in the parks. How do you even promote Marvel when your theme park competitor has a whole land dedicated to them? “Hey…go see the latest Marvel movie, and buy the toys and comics and cereal, but don’t go to Marvel land at IOA.”
